{"id":60,"date":"2014-01-14T02:31:39","date_gmt":"2014-01-14T02:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mortalmoroni.wpengine.com\/?p=60"},"modified":"2014-01-14T02:31:39","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T02:31:39","slug":"missing-a-public-intellectual-and-force-for-the-common-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mortalmoroni.com\/?p=60","title":{"rendered":"Missing: A Public Intellectual and Force for the Common Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was gratifying to read this thoughtful piece of reporting on DK&#8217;s passing in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sltrib\/news\/57333876-78\/keller-david-ethics-uvu.html.csp\">The Salt Lake Tribune<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>UVU professor, who was esteemed for his work in environmental ethics, remembered as a \u201cpublic intellectual.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He always said it wasn\u2019t his job to convince his students of his point of view, but to give them a broad understanding of various points of view,&#8221; said Richard Keller. In his 18 years at UVU, David Keller brought lofty ideas down to earth, said philosophy professor Elaine Englehardt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He helped students understand the most difficult of philosophical ideas,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He had the ability to explain simply what he was trying to say.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed. DK knew how to present ideas in a way that made the lofty available. <\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, he made a series of videotaped lectures that are all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLAA1C3E3992E425EC\">available on YouTube<\/a>. Here&#8217;s the first in the series of eight:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p1Gd5r2hxBQ?list=PLAA1C3E3992E425EC\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I especially hope to show how the study of philosophical ethics is directly pertinent to everyday life, in your personal relationships, in your job and as a citizen in a democracy,&#8221; DK said. <\/p>\n<p>DK was a well respected and well known intellectual who dared not dwell in ivory towers.
